Alwar, Picturesque Hill Palaces and Sariska Tiger Reserve.

Two pics of the City Palace; below left, the Palace resort at Silliserh lake, right the fort Bala Quila, and the Fairy Queen that takes a luxury train fro Delhi to Alwar-Sariska; and Sariska Palace in the tiger reserve.

Alwar, in north western Rajasthan, 116 kms west of Baharatpur, and 148 kms north east of Jaipur; a one time princely state with palaces set in the hills; a large part of Alwar town is built amidst rugged terrain. The main City Palace perched next to a steep crop of rocky hill makes for a very picturesque sight. The defensive fort, Bala Qila, just west of the city, is one of the largest fort in western India, its walls crossing the hills a worth visit. -----(for the tourist who is in no hurry, he has been following my posts, Delhi, then south to Agra and Gwalior, then west to Bharatpur and Deeg via Agra, a short detour to Vrindavan north east of Deeg [or Vrindavan can be visited on the way to Agra from Delhi] and now westwards to Alwar)---just 30 kms south of the town is the Sariska Tiger reserve set amidst forests and hills, with a superb resort palace in its midst.

Alwar somehow evokes a fairyland set in hills and YES, THE FAIRY QUEEN, a luxury train hauled by the oldest running locomotive in the world takes the enchanted tourist from Delhi to Alwar-Sariska!! And the Sariska Tiger Reserve with an area of 800 sq kms, has in addition to the tiger, langur, leopard, chital, nilgai, wild boar, antelope and jungle cats.

a superb site on Sariska and other wild life and other habitat reserves:

This palace looks amazing, specially for the lake in the middle of the palace. The architecture of the palace with round edge it very different that most of the western palaces.
