Birds at the Keoladeo bird sanctuary; below 2 pics. of Laxmi Vilas Palace, Bharatpur; and below- 3 pics of the Deeg Palace at Deeg, 35 kms north of Bharatpur.
After New Delhi and Agra and with a short drive south to
Gwalior (see posts Delhi Agra , then Gwalior land of the Scindhias -), now drive back north to Agra and take the western NH 11 from Agra to Bharatpur( only 50 kms west of Agra.). Here the Keoladeo Bird sanctuary is a must, the best time being October to February, when birds migrate here from the winter of more northern regions, including Siberia.....because the Siberian cranes are then the must see. The bird sanctuary was an eco-project of the Maharajas of Bharatpur (this one time principality was founded by Maharaja Suraj Mal in 1756) Now declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, this one time duck-hunting reserve of the Maharajas is one of the major wintering areas for large numbers of aquatic birds from Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, China and Siberia. Some 364 species of birds, including the rare Siberian Crane, have been recorded in the park.

(The first ruler styled as Maharaja was Mah. Suraj Mal 1756-1763, a Jat, son of a Thakur (headman-landowner), Badan Singh, but who rose to great prominence in North India for his valour, diplomacy and military skills. The Jats are different from the Rajputs who form most of the kingdoms called Rajput states.) more info and a very eventful history on Bharatpur : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bharatpur%2C_India

Gorgeous photographs.. Deeg is a hidden attraction of Rajasthan....
Nice post. Thanks for sharing. An erstwhile duck hunting ground for Lord Curzon, Bharatpur today is the site of one of the most well known bird sanctuaries in India. Years of colourful Jat rule have also bestowed the place with a rich historic legacy. Check out Picture Palace, a movie hall in Bharatpur.
